When an add-on is not the answer

  • Visible blood in the urine needs urgent assessment. Anyone with it is referred straight down the urgent NHS pathway rather than offered a test kit.
  • Scans that use radiation, such as CT, are arranged only where there is a clinical reason for them.
  • Tumour markers are not reliable on their own for detecting cancer, so your GP explains what they can and cannot show.
  • If you have symptoms, you need assessment rather than screening, and we will tell you so.

Genetic testing

The hereditary cancer gene panel looks for inherited changes that raise lifetime risk of certain cancers. Results can matter for your children, siblings and wider family, some findings are uncertain rather than clear-cut, and a normal result does not remove all risk. Your GP talks this through before you consent and again when results arrive. If your family history suggests an inherited cancer syndrome, you may be eligible for NHS genetic testing, and we will tell you.
